Hey healthcare providers. Reported cases of primary and secondary syphilis are higher than they’ve been in more than 20 years. Rates are increasing for almost everyone, in every part of the US. Syphilis rates are even increasing among newborn babies. But you can protect your patients by taking these actions TALK. TEST. TREAT. TALK. Take routine sexual histories if your patient is having sex. TEST. Screen your patients for syphilis. Screen all sexually active men who have sex with men at least once a year. and more frequently if they’re at higher risk for infection. Test all pregnant women at their first prenatal visit. and women at high risk should be rescreened early in their third trimester and again at delivery. Other patients may need syphilis testing based on their sexual history. TREAT. If someone tests positive for syphilis, treat him or her immediately with long-acting benzathine penicillin G IM. And advise your patient to tell their sex partners so they can get tested and treated, too. Report all cases of syphilis and congenital syphilis to your state or local health department right away. Thank you for helping us to disrupt syphilis. Resources just for you are available at

The two best methods for preventing syphilis, as well as all STDs – abstinence, and if/when decide to have sex, only with a monogamous partner who you know is free of STDs. Sure wish this information would get promoted as a societal health benefit.
