Real Patient Testimonial – P3 Pharmacogenetic Testing – Warfarin Dosing
By Bryan Wright
Recently, I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation
and was required to be on warfarin to avoid blood clots from forming in my system. I was
playing with my oldest grandchild, who was two at the time, and I started to become dizzy.
I needed to sit down, but before I did, I fainted. I woke up with my eye completely
bloodshot. I was going through some sort of internal haemorrhaging and I thought it was
because of warfarin. Because of this, and ongoing dizziness, I went on a short-term
leave from work. Luckily, I was enrolled in the Personalized Prescription Plan. I requisitioned
a P3 test for warfarin compatibility. Within a week, my P3 drug compatibility report was
sent directly to my doctor. The P3 report alerted my doctor that I was a poor metabolizer
of warfarin, and that I couldn’t clear the medication out of my system, due to my genetics.
A normal dose of warfarin was causing me to basically overdose. The test alerted my doctor
to reduce my dose, which he did. Ever since this reduction in dose, I have bounced back
and returned to work immediately.
