Hi, I’m Matthew Abbott. I’m a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. So, I have an uncle that’s a pediatric neurosurgeon
in New York City, and he initially got me interested in medicine when I was really young. I was able to job shadow him, and ever since
then, when I was in seventh grade, is when I initially got interested. Ever since then, I’ve been really interested
in helping others and it’s just kind of grown as I’ve gotten older. It’s just always been something I’ve been
interested in. When I went through, in medical school, orthopedic
surgery really interested me, and the ability to help treat others and get people back to
living their normal life. The surgeries were very interesting. The ability to work on bones and joints was
very intriguing to me. Then, as I got further, being able to treat
children is obviously just something that really I was drawn to, the ability to help
kids get back to their normal lives. They always seem to have a very positive outlook
with things. It always makes things fun, being able to
work with and around kids. I think I want the patients and the families
to know that I really care for how the children do. I really like to ensure that everybody feels
comfortable and feels like they can put their trust in me. Being able to treat children is really an
honor and a privilege and I know that they’re at their most vulnerable when they’re coming
to see me. I take great pride in being able to treat
them well. With the children, I like to joke around with
them. I think, initially, not going straight into
what’s exactly wrong. It’s good to build a rapport before you really
talk about things that are worrying them. I think just bringing an air of relaxation
to them is really helpful. I think it also helps the parents. When they come in to see me they’re obviously
very nervous and very worried about their children. And to try and calm the entire situation is,
I think, very helpful with that. Being able to treat the children is really
what I love to do. It’s very rewarding to see these children
just get better. To do the surgeries, they’re just so exciting
to be able to do that and to see the before and after of surgeries is something that,
on a daily basis, just gets me up out of bed and love doing what I do. I have a two-year old, so that takes a lot
of my time. My wife and I are very busy with that. But when I do find time, we like to travel
and I do like to golf. Other things that I like to do, we’ve been
very interested in mission trips, medical mission trips. I’ve taken a few mission trips to Kenya and
to Ecuador, which has been a passion of mine since I’ve gotten into medicine as well.
