My treatment philosophy is to
not just treat the patient, but to take care of
the family as well. Kidney transplant patients
are very complicated. They have a lot
of complex needs, and this affects the family as
a whole, not just the child. So I try to make sure
that the treatments that I’m recommending
to these families– that the families are
in agreement with it and that it fits their
particular lifestyle and their whole family. I’m trained in all
areas of nephrology, but my particular
areas of interest are kidney transplants. I mostly take care of children
right before transplant, and then immediately
after transplant. MUSC has a comprehensive
pediatric kidney transplant program, which is very
unique for children. We take care of children in
all stages of kidney disease, from children with hypertension
and normal kidney function to children on
dialysis, and then all the way through
to transplant and after transplant. And we are the only
pediatric kidney transplant program in the state. We bring a comprehensive
program to our patients. We take care of the patients
in all the areas of their life, whether they have social
needs, whether they have dietary needs, whether
they have medical needs. So we’re able to
comprehensively take care of the patients
and their families. When we don’t know the
answer to problems, we go and find those answers. We tackle these
difficult questions head on with our
research, and then we bring those answers back
to our patients firsthand.
