Bio-Psycho-Social-Spiritual Model of Medicine

What is the Bio-Psycho-Social-Spiritual
Model of Medicine? When someone is sick it’s not only the biology that can cause
a problem. It actually includes the psychology, the sociology, and the
spiritual components of a human being. There’s many factors when you look at
disease and illness and when we only look at one portion of it, it fails to
address other issues that may actually be lurking behind what’s going on. One
example of this is, if you look at the border between California and Arizona
and you look at a map, there is a thick, black line that represents a distinction
between those two states. But when you actually go to the border, there is no
line. It’s all the same thing. So, similarly we call something, “hey, that’s
the body. Hey, that’s the mind,” and we put labels on these different functions or
portions of a human being. But there really is no line, it’s simply a label.
One medical example of this is something called Takotsubo cardiomyopathy and this
is where an emotional experience can actually begin to create structural
changes to the heart. So this was first described by Japanese doctors where a
patient developed chest pain and it mimicked a heart attack. And what they
found was that the patient was not having a heart attack,
but actually having structural changes to the heart. Now, the cause of that was
that her husband had recently passed away and she had developed a broken
heart, and so they called it the “broken heart syndrome.” We need to address
all of these factors to have this holistic approach to the care of a human being,
because human beings are definitely more than just the body, or more than cells or
more than neurotransmitters in the brain. We need to consider these other factors
to have a bigger impact in your health. Let me know what you think about the
