ADVOCATE – Added Value for Oral Health Care

Good teeth are important for people of any age, for eating, for smiling and supporting good general health. As we live longer, healthier lives it’s important that our teeth live longer, too. Since the 1960s we have seen massive
reductions in tooth decay. But even today dental diseases are the most common chronic conditions in the world which in the European Union alone cost insurance companies governments and individuals over 80 billion Euro a year. These diseases are largely preventable, so clearly more can be done to promote
prevention and increase quality of life. The advocate project exists to show how
evidence-based learning, patient data analysis, and innovation can help. Since 2015 we’ve been gathering people’s views and knowledge and exploring the ideas and perceptions that surround good dental care. We’ve created apps where
patients can feedback on their treatment and the care they have received. Feedback that allows dentists to better understand their patients experience and measure their own real-time performance We’ve created dashboards that combine
this information with data gathered for administrative purposes so dentists can
see how they’re doing and compare their outcomes with other dentists. Qur quality improvement learning groups also enable different dentists to safely compare
their data using the feedback and evidence they’ve gathered to share best
practice and improve prevention. And last but not least we’ve looked at preventive practice in eight different European systems, canvassing attitudes behaviors
and working practices and comparing differences across them to help improve
oral health promotion. At ADVOCATE we believe that by understanding how national dental care systems work best and motivating dentists and patients to
work together in a partnership of prevention, we can help reduce decay,
improve health, and put smiles on millions of faces. To find out more visit
