7 Eye Glasses LIFE HACKS and Glasses Tips

By Bryan Wright 66 Comments December 11, 2019

being an eyeglasses wearer can come with
some frustrating problems anywhere from the glasses sliding down the nose to
getting bent, getting dirty or just getting in the way. so in this video I’m
gonna be sharing seven glasses tips and life hacks that’ll help people who wear
eyeglasses let’s take a look. hey what’s up this is
dr. Allen here from the doctor eye health show helping you learn all about
the eyes and vision and on this channel we do a lot of different product reviews
around glasses and contacts as well as educational videos just like this one so
if you’re new here to the channel consider subscribing also at any point
throughout the video I’ll include additional information tips and links in
the YouTube description below if you want to check that out otherwise let’s
get into the tips tip another one is that if you’re somebody whose eyeglasses
keep sliding down your nose then oftentimes just getting them readjusted
professionally could be the ultimate fix but sometimes even if they’re adjusted
correctly they still slide down in those cases I recommend a product called nerd
wax nerd wax kind of looks like a tube of chapstick but it’s specifically made
to put on the bridge of your nose or on the nose pads that way when you’re
putting the glasses on it doesn’t slide down your face anymore what’s nice is
that nerd wax is specifically made for glasses so if it does get on the lenses
at all it cleans off really easily without damaging your glasses
number two is that if your glasses are feeling either too loose or too tight
then you need to get them adjusted but taking them into an optical to be
professionally adjusted maybe just won’t be that convenient for you instead
here’s a few ways you can do it at home if you have metal frames they are easily
adjusted just by bending the metal however if you have plastic frames and
you try to do the same thing you’ll end up breaking the glasses so first you
have to heat them up you can first use a hairdryer or you can even heat them up
under hot running water once they’re heated up you can then apply some
pressure with your fingers and then you can bend them back into place for some
parts of the frame you may need to use a pliers such as these special ones we
have in the optical here these ones actually have a protective plastic
coating on the outside so you don’t scratch the frames but one thing you can
do is wrap a lens cloth around the edge of a needle nose pliers and it’ll also
protect your frame just the same way also if you’re not sure which way to
bend your frame simply do the tabletop test when you set your glasses on a
table and you can kind of see which side of
the temple is lifting up from the table and which side is down then you simply
just need to bend it back the opposite direction but be careful if you bend
your eyeglasses too much you could break the frame tip number three is that if
the arm or the temple breaks off and you lose the screw here’s a couple of hacks
to get those glasses in working order until you can get that screw
professionally replaced the first way is that toothpick method this is not my
favorite but it’s where you take the pointy end of a toothpick and jam that
into the hinge where the screw once was then you simply snap off the edge of the
toothpick and then it’ll pretty much jam that whole hands right into place again
it’s not my favorite but it does work in a pinch a much better way is using
dental floss you can use the floss to thread through the hinge and then tie it
tightly this way you don’t risk breaking the frame but at least last long enough
for you to get into the optical to get that screw replaced some people
recommend using superglue to fix their eyeglasses in this way but I don’t
recommend it unless you’re absolutely sure that you’re gonna be getting new
glasses because once the superglue is on there they’re toast if you still have
the screw but the hinge is just stripped then chances are you do need new glasses
and some people will use nail polish to kind of gum up where the screw actually
goes in that’s another method but again chances are your glasses are gonna be
ruined and so you’ll ultimately need some new glasses number four have you
ever had this problem laying down or trying to get comfortable looking at
your phone watching TV or reading a book it can be really frustrating and can
actually bend and ruin your glasses but there are two products on the market
that can help you out first is the LaySee pillow which is kind
of a throw pillow that you can lay down on and it has a special groove for your
glasses to fit in so your glasses aren’t being bent and adjusted and throwing off
your vision while relaxing on a couch or maybe laying down to look at your phone
another fun product in our mirror glasses these ones I’m actually
embarrassed to say how much I actually like these type of glasses but the
mirror glasses allow you to lay flat on your back while simultaneously watching
a YouTube video or reading a book without actually cringing your neck and
putting yourself in an uncomfortable position the mirror glasses do fit over
smaller glasses frames and they may look a little funny but I really do like
these things number five is how to see when
you do not have your glasses one kind of cool trick is something called the
pinhole effect that’s where you hold up your fingers and you look through this
small little hole created and you can notice that everything just seems a
little bit clearer the bedroll works because you’re basically eliminating
stray rays of light entering the eye and it becomes kind of a closed system where
you just get one focal point instead of a whole bunch throwing off the entire
system this is the same reason why your vision tends to get better when you are
squinting your eyelids funny enough you can find pinhole glasses on sale online
however I don’t recommend them they’re more of a novelty item they are not a
solution for glasses if there’s somebody who’s very farsighted or hyper optic and
you have a hard time seeing up close then perhaps using your phone to take a
picture of a near object and then blowing it up by making the image larger
that could potentially help you see things up close or consider picking up a
pair of cheaters or reading glasses as they are basically just magnifying
lenses made into glasses but the six is how to clean up my glasses now I have a
whole more in-depth tips and tricks video on how to clean glasses and I’ll
hook a link up here in a YouTube card as well as in the description below if you
want to check out that full video but the basics is that one you do not want
to clean your glasses using your shirt your shirt will have different fibers on
there and possibly debris that you can use it to clean your glasses but it’ll
end up scratching the lenses so it’s much better to use a microfiber cloth
additionally you can go ahead and just breathe hard on the lenses and then try
to clean it that way but it is also much better to use some sort of a cleaning
solution that way it’ll get rid of all the extra streaks and skin oils
sometimes using dish soap is another pro tip that way you can really get any sort
of fingerprint smudges and other sort of facial oils off of those lenses tip
number seven is do not leave your glasses on the dashboard or in direct
sunlight as direct sunlight will heat up the lenses and the frame and can ruin
the frame as well as causing what’s called crazing on the surface of the
lenses where the lenses start to bubble and the alda extra coatings on the
surface of the lens start coming off and this can even happen to some of the
higher quality frame coatings that are out there so eye health question of the
day which one of these tips was your favorite and do you have any other I
glasses tips of your own go ahead and share and comment in the section below
hope you found this video helpful if you liked it give me a thumbs up otherwise
keep an eye on it and we’ll talk to you soon

Your video was very helpful, thank you. Could you do a video giving advice for people that are nearsighted on what choices are available when getting new glasses, what options are available for lenses with bifocals? I recently had cataract surgery but still need a slight correction in my distance vision and a 2.5 correction for my nearsightedness, but was unable to afford the over $300 price tag (and that was just for lenses as I planned to use my old glass frames) and ended up getting some cheap magnifying glasses for a temporary fix. It would help if I knew what lens options were really needed and not just a waste of money.

Wonder what's in that spray.? I've been told using dish washing liquid and alcohol based cleaners can damage lens coatings?

Good tip about the heat. I've often thought about that as I leave my glasses on the dash to go in for dental appts.

Awesome hacks! Nice quality video! One quick addition: The table rock test may not the best way to see if frames are properly adjusted because people tend to have one ear higher then another and then the glasses would sit straight on table but crooked on face.

Just another little tip for when your eyeglasses slide down your face. Take some of those hair rubber bands that the girls use to tie their pony tails in and tie them around your ear pieces of your glasses. I do this daily when Iโ€™m not wearing my contacts and my eyeglasses never move. They stay in place. This comes in handy during the summer time when you sweat.

Such good tips, thanks! Learned the not leaving glasses in high heat the hard way, my first pair of prescription sunglasses I always left in the car including on days where the temp was over 100 outside and could not figure out why they didn't fit right after that.

DO NOT BREATHE ON YOUR GLASSES FOR CLEANING! I'm a Dual Licensed Optician, my facts are checked. The reason you shouldn't breathe on glasses is because the particles leaving your mouth can land on the lenses and scratch them just as bad as using a shirt. Also, your mouth is designed to digest food and you are wanting to breathe all the digestive power of your breath onto the delicate lenses that help you see… Not a great idea.

Forget the wax stuff. These are the ultimate solution to glasses slipping down your nose. Everyone I've recommended them to loves them. Cheap, easy answer. Every optician should sell them:

My favorite tip was the c-pillow. I have a tip of my own that is similar to the pinch hole tip you shared. I use my entire hand like almost closing into a fist. You're absolutely a pleasure to watch and the information you share is so valuable. Thank you!

Completely frustrating. Don't let the eye glass place use a heating g tool to stretch…it ruins your very expensive frames.

Hey doc, i just started using glasses few days ago, I do see really better with them but how ever sometime I see for example some objects if they are square I see them a little rectangle.. anyway there is one side of the lens that has more magnification than the other would it be because Iโ€™m not use to it?

Doc, go on Amazon. For $10 you can buy a 500pc. assortment of tiny screws in two dozen sizes. Complete with tiny screwdriver. Can fix many things for many years. And, your optician usually isn't a good mechanic. If you use one drop of LocTite threadlock on the screw, it will never fall out again. But can be unscrewed.

having had glasses since I was crawling what I would do would be to strip a twist tie of the paper/plastic and put it through the frame and twist until the wires broke. usually held quite well and fast fix. I did have a optician fix my lost screw by using a longer screw with a nut through the joint because that always unscrewed and he said he preferred doing that vs loctite.

I've recently had to get clip ons. In one way I wish I didn't need the clip ons. Why? Because in the trying out process, the first pair that a optometrist clipped on my glasses has left scratches on my glasses. Which means I'll be getting a new pair a lot sooner than I need to. And I'm definitely going to get Transitions Glasses next time. Hopefully that way I can avoid getting my glasses scratched up by clip ons….. ๐Ÿ‘€โš›๏ธโ˜ฎ๏ธ

๐Ÿ˜ƒ Thank you so much for sharing your glasses tips. Will try them out especially the mirror glasses๐Ÿ˜‚! Iโ€™ve used dish soap to clean my glasses before too but the lens were damaged due to excessive amounts of dish soap I applied and frequently washing with dish soap.

I now use ZEISS lens wipes (pre-moistened with mild alcohol, 50 wipes per pack) to clean my glasses and other lens/devices as recommended by my local optometrist. I asked if there were other ways of cleaning my glasses apart from dish soap and this was recommended. I find it convenient to remove stains and oils. Not sure if it will damage the coating on the lens over time though. Great video! ๐Ÿ‘
